Gain Critical Electrical Safety Knowledge While Earning CEUs & Certifications.

IEA is excited to announce the offering of a special course in Electrical Codes and Safety Training on July 15, 2026, at the Woodlake Meeting Center from 7:30-4:30 pm. This course is intended for qualified workers or any employee who works on or near energized equipment. The sections of this course will cover the National Electric Code for MN Registered Unlicensed Electricians, Arc Flash and Electrical Training, as well as Contact Release training.  Completion of all three sections will qualify for up to two (2) CEUs and three (3) certifications. This course will be led by NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional, Phil Haataja. He has been helping people across the country with electrical safety since 2016 and is a co-owner of safeHANDSystems, LLC.

7:30-8:00 a.m. – Check-in and Refreshments
8:00-10:00 a.m. – 2-CEU National Electric Code for MN Registered Unlicensed Electricians (MN Course: CRSE2507-0001)
10:00 a.m.-Noon – Arc Flash & Electrical Safety Training
Noon-12:30 p.m. – Lunch (provided)
12:30-3:30 p.m. – Arc Flash & Electrical Safety Training (continued)
3:30-4:30 p.m. – Contact Release Training
Cost: $375 (SSC Members) / $425 (non-members)
Cancellation policy: Cancellations will be accepted until July 1st at 4:00 PM. If you cancel by this deadline, you will not be invoiced.  Cancellations made after July 1st at 4:00 PM are not eligible for a refund.  Payment is required and the credit can be applied toward a future class.

Meet your instructor 

Phil Haataja is an NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP) with 30+ years of experience working in commercial and industrial locations. Since 2016, he’s used his electrical safety expertise to help people across the country get it aligned with NFPA 70E, the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. He’s a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), MN Healthcare Engineers Association (MHCEA), the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), Senior Member in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Chief Engineers Guild (MNCEG), American Waterworks Association (AWWA), MN Assn of School Maintenance Supervisors (MASMS) and a member of the IEEE Power & Energy Society. 

Phil is a registered non-code electrical instructor in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Alaska. He has authored a variety of classes to provide CEU’s to electricians in these states on topics involving electrical safety and power system analysis. Phil has routinely been called to be a guest speaker on electrical safety issues by the MN Chief Engineers Guild, the Minnesota Mine Safety Association, Iowa Ready Mix Concrete Association, American Waterworks Association, and numerous clients and connections across the country. He, his wife Cindy, and brother John Haataja are co-owners/partners of safeHANDSystems, LLC, and reside in Central Minnesota. 

Learning objectives 

By the end of this training session, learners will be able to: 

  • Apply their knowledge of electrical hazards to safely release electrical-shock victims. 
  • Understand the updates to NFPA 70E. 
  • Recognize and understand the hazards associated with electrical energy. 
  • Identify and select safe work practices based on the tasks they are performing. 
  • Apply knowledge of electrical hazards to understand the impact and severity of possible injury. 
  • Recognize signs of impending failure and how to address them. 
  • Demonstrate what constitutes energized work and when an energized work permit is required. 
  • Select the proper insulated tools and testing instruments for working within the restricted approach boundary. 
  • Show how to use the eight-step process for establishing an electrically safe work condition. 
  • Identify the elements of equipment arc flash labeling.
