Grant funding is currently available to help Minnesota child care facilities offset the cost of addressing lead in drinking water—starting with required testing.
The Institute for Environmental Assessment (IEA) is assisting licensed child care facilities across Minnesota with MDH-compliant lead in drinking water sampling and wants to make providers aware of a current Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) funding opportunity.
Why Lead Testing Matters
Under Minnesota Statutes §145.9273, licensed child care facilities are required to test drinking water outlets used for:
- Drinking
- Food preparation
- Cooking
Facilities must:
- Develop and follow a lead testing plan using MDH or EPA guidance
- Complete testing at least once every five years, or after plumbing changes
- Take required response actions if elevated lead levels are identified
If your facility is due for testing—or has not tested previously—this is an ideal time to complete sampling.
MDH Lead in Water Remediation Grant
MDH is offering a Lead in Water Remediation Grant to help offset the cost of corrective actions when lead is identified.
Eligible projects may include:
- Replacing drinking water fixtures or outlets
- Removing plumbing materials that contain lead
- Installing automatic flushing devices to reduce water stagnation
Grant funding is intended to support facilities after testing confirms a need for remediation.
