IEA is offering a Special Engineer Level Boiler License Review Course WITH an onsite exam. Exams will be offered for ALL levels of state boiler licensing.

8:00 AM Special Engineer Level Boiler License Review Course

11:30 AM Working lunch provided

12:30 PM Special Engineer Level Boiler License Review Course (continued)

1:30 PM Break and Check in for Exam

2:00 PM Exam Offered Onsite through the State of Minnesota

Cost:

  • Cost of $250 (This includes the 6-hour review course and lunch).
  • MASMS Members can attend for a $100 discount. Use the coupon code MASMS when registering for the event. You must be listed as a paid member of MASMS.
  • $50 payable to the MN Department of Labor & Industry for the Individual Boiler Engineer License Examination Application.

Step One:

Step Two (two parts):
Complete the Individual Boiler Engineer License Examination Application through the Department of Labor Industry (see instructions below). YOU MUST register for the exam on-line, which is in two parts. We cannot do that for you. If you do not do both of the parts, you will not be able to take the exam on February 18, 2026.

Part A – Applying for the Exam. Do this step immediately in order for processing time.

  • Go to: https://ims.dli.mn.gov/ims/
  • When on the iMS System CONTINUE AS GUEST (bottom left corner)
  • In the LICENSE & REGISTRATION title click on NEW LICENSE OR REGISTRATION
  • Click on the DISCIPLINE (Boiler)
  • Click on the license TYPE
  • Continue to Follow the Prompts

Once you do that you need to wait for an email from the State confirming they received your fee and that you are approved (it could take a few days).

The title of the message will be “Qualified for Engineer Exam”.

Part B – Scheduling the exam. Scheduling OPENS up on February 2, 2026. Do this on February 2nd – if you wait until after February 2nd the spots may fill up and you may not get in.

Go to: https://ims.dli.mn.gov/ims/

  • When on the iMS System CONTINUE AS GUEST (bottom left corner)
  • Type the registration/application number (this is found on the email you received from the state) in the white box that says GO TO RECORD # (upper left corner).
  • Click on the GREEN CIRCLE WITH THE CALENDAR in it, to schedule your exam.
  • Click on EXAM LOCATION (Northeast Service Cooperative – Mt. Iron, MN)
  • Click on DATE (February 18, 2026)
  • Click on TIME (2 PM)

Additional Info:

  • The help number for exam and licensing questions at the MN State Department of Labor and Industry is 651-284-5031
  • You MUST bring documentation from your application and a photo ID with you to the exam.
  • Once you pass the exam, the State will send you a second invoice for your license fee.

Read and study the book Safe Boiler Operation Fundamentals: Special Engineer’s Guide for the State of MN. Use the title and ISBN number 978-0-8269-4611-9 to order through your local library. This publication is complete with a complimentary learning CD! Be sure to read, re-read and study it through and through! There are tests in the back that can help you determine how well you have learned the information. Remember, there is no substitute for reading and studying this text book!

  • All boiler license exam levels will be available for testing.
  • Please know that you do not have to take the review course, you may just register with the State and take the exam at 2:00 PM that day. If you chose to do this, then you do not need to pay the course/lunch fee.
  • It is strongly recommended you take the review course.
  • This event has a short turnaround time so ensure you sign up ASAP and start the registration process with the state to ensure you will be able to take the exam on February 18th!
